Metabolic syndrome can be diagnosed from the following list when 3 or more of these are positive.

  • In those cases, you have more chances to develop diabetes and heart disease.
  • This system was developed by the National Institute of Health and labeled these people with metabolic syndrome when >3 parameters were found.

Basic metabolic panel:

Parameter Clinical finding
  • Waist size in males
  • >40 inches
  • Waist size in females
  • >35 inches
  • Blood pressure
  • 130/85 or more
  • Fasting blood glucose
  • >110 mg/dL
  • Triglycerides
  • >150 mg/dL
  • HDL-cholesterol  in men
  • <40 mg/dL
  • HDL-cholesterol in woman
  • <50 mg/dL

What are the risks of metabolic syndrome:

  1. Increased chances of heart disease.
  2. Increased chances of stroke.
  3. Increased chances of diabetes mellitus type 2.
