Typhidot Test

What sample is needed for the Typhidot test?

  • Venous blood is taken to get the serum.

What is the indication for the typhidot test?

  • The main indication is to diagnose Typhoid fever.

What are the positive aspects of the Typhidot Test?

  1. This test detects antibody IgG and IgM in the patient’s serum.
  2. The commercial kit manufacturer claims that Typhidot can detect antibodies in the first few days of fever when Widal is negative.
  3. The Typhidot is easy to perform and requires no special equipment.
  4. Typhidot will be a useful complementary test to blood culture and the Widal test in typhoid fever diagnosis.
  5. The widal test is positive after at least 7 to 10 days of Typhoid fever.

How will you perform the typhidot test?

  1. First, you have to get the patient’s serum.
  2. Then, add serum 45 µL in the test slots.
  3. Add buffer solution one drop.

How much is the result accuracy of the Typhidot test?

  1. This is a rapid test, and accuracy is not clear.
  2. The Typhidot test gave a sensitivity of 100 percent and specificity of 80 percent when bacteremic patients were analyzed.
  3. Another study shows the test’s sensitivity and specificity using blood culture as the gold standard were 92.3 % and 98.8 %, respectively, for typhoid fever.
  4. One study was done in Pakistan.

How will you interpret the Typhidot test result?

Positive line Interpretation
IgM Acute typhoid fever
IgM + IgG Acute typhoid fever
IgG only and IgM (negative) Past infection

What are the advantages of the Typhidot test?

  1. Typhidot is easy to perform.
  2. There is no need for any equipment.
  3. There is no need to train the laboratory staff.
  4. This may be a useful complementary test to the widal test and blood culture.
  • NOTE: My personal experience is that widal is still a better option and more reliable than Typhidot because Typhidot false-positive results are very common.
Question 1: What is the difference between Typhidot and widal test?
Show answer
It is claimed that typhidot will be positive early than the widal test.
Question 2: When will the widal test be positive in typhoid fever?
Show answer
Widal test will become positive after 7 to 10 days.
